KYVL ADA Workgroup - Meeting Minutes

Date:           September 8, 2003

Meeting:           KYVL ADA Workgroup Committee

Present:       Linnie Calland, Carla Cantagallo, Michael Providenti, Dana Parker, Angel Smith, Jenny Tyree, Lesley Wolfgang-Jackson, Tanzi Merritt, Enid Wohlstein

The meeting began with a general discussion. First, Enid talked about the charge of the group, which is to assist KYVL in the process of reworking our website to be ADA compliant. Participants talked about their past experiences working with ADA compliance. Many points were made during the discussion:

It can be difficult to locate information on different assistive technologies and standards. There is no centralized place to find this information.

There are issues of designing websites that are complaint and can also be used with wireless devices.

Kentucky law requires all state government agencies to comply with Section 508. Linnie passed out to the group a copy of the KRS regulations that discuss ADA complaince.

All KYVL vendors will need to be contacted regarding their level of ADA compliance.

If a site is to be redesigned, it should be redesigned for AAA compliance.

Many Internet tools that check a page for compliance can be fooled and are not always reliable measures of compliance.

It was determined that the group's first step would be to develop an accessibility statement. Group members will locate examples of this and share with the group. Michael recommends the online book Dive into Accessibility as one of the first and best tools for developing a statement.

The differences in assistive technologies was discussed as an issue. Michael points out that developing a site by following maximum web accessibility standards will make the site accessible to the widest variety of assistive software. He also points out that a standards-based site will be compatible with older versions of web browsers.

A webcast on serving customers with disabilities, geared towards libraries, will take place on September 24. All are encouraged to participate if possible. In addition, Strategies for Creating a Barrier Free Library, which is linked on the work group's site, contains a two-part lesson on ADA compliance.

In the final part of the meeting the group took a close look at Northern Kentucy University's Steely Library website, which Michael is currently making fully standards-based.
