KYVL ADA
Workgroup - Meeting Minutes
Meeting: KYVL ADA Workgroup Committee
Absent: Caral Cantagallo, Marcia Harley, Sara
King, Linnie Lee, Nancy Mollette, Bobbie Beth Scoggins, Jenny Tyree
1. New Kids'
Portal Sneak Peak
We looked at the in progress html version of the
Kids' Portal. To see the Kids' Portal,
go to http://www.kyvl.org and choose Kids under the Learning Communities on the
right-hand side of the page.
Bryce gave us a walk-thru of the completed pages and
described the work involved. He is
using CSS Sprites which is a technique about a month old. He can create image maps which can be read
by a screenreader. Using the CSS
Sprites technique also means that the page and images will be read in
order. He is also employing Fahrner
image replacement. The html version
will not have sounds as the original html version did not include sounds [the
Flash version does]. Bryce is also
adding the Glossary text within the page.
2.
Accessibility Statement
We need to get access keys defined (1 through 0)
before we can finalize a template for the main KYVL site. Enid will ask our web support person at UK
if he can provide us with a report on most used pages to possibly help us in
defining the access keys.
We made some notations on the draft Accessibility
Statement. The Flash and PDF
paragraphs need some editing as we are not going to do an absolute, all site
rollout. Our transition will be phased
and we need to include statements to that effect in our Accessibility
Statement.
We also need to add a statement on links to other
websites. Example "KYVL cannot
guarantee accessibility or content of any sites we link to... Best efforts have been made to provide
quality information reviewed by subject matter experts."
We also would like to add a section on Kentucky
Accessibility sites such as http://ada.state.ky.us, a link to the Kentucky
Revised Statutes (KRS) re: accessibility [61.980 to 61.988] for example. www.katsnet.org is also a very helpful site
with many, many relevant resources and links.
We also think a link to http://www.ittatc.org would be useful as it
provides a survey of state efforts in ADA issues.
3. Screen
Readers
Who has what?
We have lists from Linnie and Jenny.
We discussed a problem with our draft statement on
NKU Steely Library's page. Blenda
commented that there isn't a pause after items. Blenda was using Read and Write Gold version 6. Michael said the text has markup language to
define the items as list items. The
software should understand there is a pause.
We'll need to check into this with a more current version of Read and
Write Gold.
We also discussed a Tab Index and that we won't do
this. Within the page code, you can
force the tabbing order but then, if new items are added to the page, the tab
order has to be redefined.
4.
Pass-through Pages
We discussed pass-through pages as mentioned in
Michael's email from 3/25. Those in
attendance voted against having these as we consider them a barrier for some
and too cumbersome. A pass-through page
would state something like "You are about to leave KYVL. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of the
target site..."
We also discussed the pass-through page a user is
presented with when choosing to search a database in its native format. Meaning, when a user chooses Find Books,
Articles and More from our main KYVL page, and then choose one of the buttons
at the bottom of the page to search the native interface of EBSCO, Novelist,
ProQuest, etc.
The user is presented with this page: You are about to leave KYVL! Your search history will be lost and your
session will end if you leave. To
search the catalogs and databases from within the KYVL Gateway, you can return
to log-in again or click the back button now.
Click here to continue to EBSCO.
<http://search.epnet.com/reflogin.asp?group=spec>
The user must click on the link to continue to their
chosen destination. Tanzi had to leave
the meeting to conduct some training sessions so she wasn't available to answer
the question: Why do we have this page? Enid speculated as to why it existed but no
one in attendance knew of a technical requirement. Enid or Tanzi will be asked to look into this. All felt this page was an unnecessary
barrier and if it could be removed, the group would be in agreement.
5. Usability
We talked about usability and if anyone had
experience in the area of usability testing.
We looked at the Usability Research Lab site at D.H. Hill Library of
North Carolina State University which has a listing of selected resources
[articles, books, discussion lists, etc].
This list is located at http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/dli/usability/library_usability.html.
Lesley will volunteer to lead this if no one else has
experience in usability testing. We
talked about dividing the NC State University>Usability Research Lab list of
resources and having everyone take a section of resources to review and report
back. [Either Enid or Lesley will
divide this list - Enid can't remember.]
