KYVL ADA Workgroup - Meeting Minutes

Date:           Friday, October 29th, 10:00 – 12:00 p.m.

Meeting:           KYVL ADA Workgroup Committee

Present:       Carla Cantagallo, Angel Clemons, Blenda Fields, Marcia Harley, Linnie Lee, Nancy Mollette, Michael Providenti, Jenny Tyree, Enid Wohlstein, Lesley Wolfgang-Jackson

Absent:        Sara King, Bobbie Beth Scoggins, Bryce Fields

1.      Angel Clemons volunteered to be Secretary for the ADA workgroup.

2.      Bryce created the templates and the table of contents, but was not at the meeting to demonstrate.  The accessibility statement and accessibility keys still need to be finalized.  Bryce is also considering using Word and html documents instead of pdf’s because of the problems associated with pdf files and Braille.

3.      Usability testing

·       The committee generated the following list of groups we could work with to test the KYVL pages.

OVR

Dept for the Blind

KDLA

Mike Garn

KCTS coordinators

KAMD & KAMC

KLA, KSLA, KSME

School for the Blind

Low Vision Institute (Lexington)

Dr. John Musick (Versailles)

Institutional & library disability coordinators

Other contacts: VI teachers throughout the states, listservs (KYVL, Tech. Res. Teachers, etc.)

·       The committee identified the following disability groups that should be considered during usability testing:

Motor

Visual

Learning

Hearing

Combinations

·       The committee also discussed the following issues regarding usability testing:

o    We could start testing with a limited number of pages.  10-15 pages was suggested as a start.

o    We could do short surveys instead of a large-scale usability test.

o    We could get a UK Library School student to work on the project as a independent study or internship.

o    The testing needs to include a set of general questions plus a section for comments.

o    The ideal number of ‘testers’ will be 70-100.

o    We need an adult version and a kids version.

o    We need to identify the types of assistive software testers will be using.  We should provide a list of choices instead of a blank fill-in-the-box because some testers may not realize that the technology that they’re using is assistive.

o    We need to have both remote & on-site testing so that we can monitor some testers and get feedback from others who will actually be using the pages remotely in the future.

o    We could use a phased approach to testing in which we pick a handful of people in the area to come in and test the pages.  However, we need representatives of all disability groups in this initial test.

o    ACTION:  The committee will look for testing instruments already in existence.

o    ACTION:  Lesley will send the URL of the NYPL testing instrument she found to the committee.
