New members were introduced: Richard Daniel, Interim Director of the KY Academy
for AE Professional Development; Cindy Read, Director of Ky. Institute for Literacy
and Nawanna Privett, Director of Collaborative Center for Literacy Development
(CCLD)
Nawanna Privett:
- The CCLD is continuing a search for an Assistant Director and Jane suggested
that they post it on the KYVAE website.
- Kentucky Adult Literacy Institute (KALI) begins in May. Nawanna wanted
4 universities to host but only 3 applied (Morehead, EKU, WKU). There will
be a beginning planning meeting fourth week of November. KALI will offer graduate
credit.
- UK has hired Dr. Kay Lowe from Sidney, Australia as reading specialist
researcher. Dr. Lowe could be included in planning for the online reading
course. The RFPs are out and due back November 9 for screening committee to
review (tentative date to review - December 10).
- Interested in Fast-For-Word new computer-based program for non-readers.
Richard Daniel:
- Discussion on KY Academy goals/plans (see http://www.kyvl.org/html/about/committees/aesteering/moreheadAE.pdf
).
- Search closed today for KY Academy Director and hope to have him/her on
board January 2, 2002.
- Meeting scheduled in November to look at KY adult educational instructional
standards.
- Kentucky Academy's Advisory Committee almost complete - December 11th meeting
scheduled at DAEL office. Listserv developed as well.
- Developing RFPs demonstration sites & Mentors solicitation for researchers
and research topics. RFP would be posted on KYVU/KYVAE site along with hard
copy. Sue to do news release for publication. Chief Academic Officer, Mike
Moore is contact person. Sue to check the hits - how many?
- Morehead's graduate level course offered via KYVU - not on KYVAE website.
Richard will get with Myk Garn to develop programmatic description for the
KYVU/VAE websites. Gene and Sue will work on linking directly to graduate
application for this degree program.
Cindy Reed:
- Mission of KIFL is to expand and improve Kentucky's family literacy. 84
of 120 counties applied for funding of development of a Family Literacy program.
KIFL is also conducting research on how the providers are participating and
why the non-participating counties chose not to apply for funding.
- Open Resource Centers with link to AE - physical room with virtual component
of 1000 books, satellite branches
- Website - library automation software, Ohio Literacy Resource Center which
does not have virtual component
- Conference of 300 in October - KAACE in September = merge both conferences
possibility of overlap w/Ky Development Educators
- Professional Development with KDE and DAEL to do 5 day (3+2) seminar face-to-face
customized to Kentucky's goals, recruitment and retention issues rely on program
design and management. David Walters (DAEL) consultant has been participating
- Online- Ray Helton, formerly U of L - Phase II
Jane Martel:
- Secretary's Rose and Miller talking about being more infused in workplace
to all for on-work-time
- Tuition incentives and tax discounts for employers ($1,250) for workers.
