Miko reported on the status of KYVL and the budget. She has heard that there will a cut of as much as 8% in the current fiscal year. Staff is the largest expenditure of KYVL. Miko made several announcements regarding staff. She will be leaving the Library to be CIO for the VU on a full time basis. Susan Brown is leaving as of October 14 to be the Director at Transyvania University Library. Jackie Kinder left on Sept. 6 to be the Electronic Librarian at Marymount in Arlington, VA. Miko will remain Director until a person can be hired. This position will represent a melding of the Director and Assistant Director positions. Jackie's position is currently frozen. The next largest budget expense of close to $1 million is the databases with the Courier contract at $280,000 following next. Then comes the $100,000 to each of the hub sites for the Endeavor Consortia, $50,000 to UK for hosting the SiteSearch server and Eric Weig's salary in conjunction with the Digitization Project. Norma and Daniel approached the database vendors and discussed the budget situation with them. As a result, OCLC, Proquest and Grolier canceled the increases that were scheduled for this year. The only potential growth population is the private P-12 schools. Miko has contacted all of the database vendors about costs associated with adding this population to the contracts.

OCLC, Grolier, and ProQuest will not charge anything additional.
Wilson and EBSCO are asking for an additional amount.

Although there have been discussions in VLAC about a fee structure for the private P-12s, there has been no resolution. Miko indicated that she will place it back on the agenda for their next meeting. Another idea that arose was that perhaps some of the funds that Norma and Daniel "saved" could possibly be expended toward this effort.

Another attempt to deal with the staff shortage has been to move the KYVL reference service back to the home institution. The only population which can still come to KYVL for reference service are the adult ed students who do not have a formal home library under that strategy.

Miko has recruited Kate Nevins at SOLINET to assist in finding a new Director for KYVL. Miko also mentioned that she is no longer eligible to serve on the SOLINET Board of Directors.
