CPE Offices, Frankfort
Present: Jill Buckland, Sonja Eads, Louann Hardy, Susan Henthorn, Anna Marie Johnson, Kevin Jones, Tom Kmetz, Mike Knecht, Tanzi Merritt, Enid Wohlstein, Haiwang Yuan
Introductions:
W elcom to Kevin Jones from EKU, our newest group member.
How To Do Research Tutorial:
Group discussed the pros/cons of copying the “How to Do Research”
tutorial into the Angel courseware. Enid recommended this so that professors
could make better use of it—perhaps pulling in one or two of the modules
into their courses. Final decision was to copy the tutorial since it will likely
not have to be updated often. Tanzi will maintain both copies. Group will review
the tutorial and send updates to Tanzi before Dec. 15. We will also look for
ways to (1) shorten the tutorial and to (2) look for links to other resources
that would be appropriate at the end of our modules. Assignments are below:
Doing Research: Mike and Susan
Finding Books: Louann and Tom
Finding Articles: Anna Marie & Jill
Searching the Web: Anna Marie & Jill
Evaluating Information: Kevin, Enid, and Haiwang
Citing Sources: Susan and Sonja
Enid will speak with an instructional designer who can advise us as to other revisions that are needed before we copy it over to the courseware. Group asked to meet with the instructional designer at the January meeting. Enid will investigate if this is possible.
Enid will also look into the possibility of doing a survey of KYVU faculty and asking about the tutorial in the course of that survey.
KYVL now has WebTrends log analyzer software and will start using to get some data on who is using the tutorial and how often.
There will be a single-sign in for students on KYVU for Angel courseware and KYVL.
A discussion of assessment of students learning post-tutorial was also intertwined with the previous tutorial discussion. Mike made some suggestions for creating assessment instruments that would not require a lot of work on our part to update. He suggested short answer questions that could be graded by the faculty. Group decided that assessment was probably a larger discussion than we were prepared to undertake today and we tabled it for the future.
Handouts:
The group discussed overall merits of creating handouts. What topics would be
covered? One suggestion was to cover pieces of the tutorial in handout form.
Tanzi suggested that one could force the formatting on the tutorial so that
the pages were printable. Another suggestion was to cover topics such as GIS,
finding book reviews, or citation styles—things that we thought were probably
given commonly as assignments or that normal people might have questions about.
No consensus was reached. Haiwang suggested that we could link to pathfinders
at the various universities. Handout format was also discussed. PDF was preferred
by the KYVL folks since they wanted to be able to “brand” the handouts
with KYVL logo etc. RTF was also suggested to allow libraries to adapt the handouts
as needed.
Connection to other Info Lit groups such as KLA LIRT:
3 or 4 of the KYVL Info Lit Work Group members are also members of KLA LIRT.
It was suggested that we look for ways to work with the members of LIRT on large-scale
projects requiring more people-power. We can also look for ways to work with
the KYVL Outreach group. There was also some discussion of working with K-12
folks. The question of what our focus would be came up.
