Meeting Minutes

November 17, 2004   10am-12pm

Present: Sonja Eads, Anna Marie Johnson, Kevin Jones, Tom Kmetz, Meg Shaw, and Enid Wohlstein

Instructional Design Report

Group discussed the 51 page report from the EmbaNet Instructional Designer.  The majority of what the designer suggested involved adding images, pop-up boxes, and Flash.  The designer noted one typographical error: an instance of KCVL on page 44 of the report.  The group raised these concerns:

·       On page 13, the image of a journal looks like a leatherbound diary rather than a scholarly periodical.  We asked that this be changed.  Meg pointed out some nice images in the UK adaptation of TILT called “Find It”.  The URL for Find It is http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/FindIt/  The group took a quick look at it and praised its graphics and spiffy colors.

·       The Pop-ups that are suggested are fine with the group as long as we can be assured that they won’t be blocked by pop-up blocking software.

·       The tutorial needs to be modularized so that professors can take a piece of it for their class rather than insisting students complete the entire tutorial.  The way the Designer had run all the text into one word document made the whole thing seem too linear.

·       Add an “input” or feedback link so that people can comment easily as they are in the tutorial.

·       Should we add more interactivity?  If so, what and where?  Committee was asked to look at this and make suggestions.

·       Tom suggested that the sitemap for the tutorial could be more visually interesting using software such as Star Tree Studio

·       We still need a short introduction for the tutorial.  The group unanimously nominated Susan to do this. J

Remaining questions: what happens to the non-Angel version of the tutorial?  Does it remain?  Do we export the Angel version?  Do we allow public access to the Angel version?

Tutorial self-quiz questions and pre-/post-test questions

Group looked over these and some that were found by Enid.  Some editorial and content changes were made.  Anna Marie will send out new drafts and ask for the question-writers to also add feedback for incorrect responses.

Real-life Information Literacy Scenarios

Anna Marie clarified her idea to create “real-life” information literacy problems that have been solved or questions that have been answered using the KYVL databases.  Some ideas discussed were:

·       Novelist: using the Lexile levels to find books for adult readers who read at lower levels.

·       Treatment for a child with ADD (Medline)

·       Something related to the Governor’s “Get Fit Kentucky” plan.

·       Something related to economic development and/or business

·       Care of Aging parents

·       Opinion polling data

·       Perhaps college choices?

·       Take the list of databases and write up what each one could do for users.

Related: Enid is going to be asking for testimonials of KYVL users as soon as the new Senior Reference Librarian is hired.  She has applications so hopefully it won’t be too long.  These testimonials could be used in conjunction with our “real-life” idea above.

Anna Marie will ask Tiana if she has a mailing list and ask LIRT folks to help with coming up with good, workable “real-life” scenarios.

Survey of School Media Specialists

Anna Marie will check into the status of this.  It was a survey that was going to go out to see what library instruction efforts were underway in K-12, but it was put on hold because of some information about the possibility of laptops being given to students which would change the dynamic of instruction possibly.

Announcements

Survey of KYVL instructors’ use of the tutorial has not yet gone out, but Enid has been out of the office much of the past month and assured us that she would try to get to it in the next week or so.

Meg needs to be given an Angel login.

Anna  Marie will look into submitting the current tutorial for PRIMO (the Internet Education Project). DONE as of 11/19/04
