KYVL Outreach & Information Literacy Workgroups Joint Meeting

March 23, 2005

Present (in real or virtual form): Tim Chase, Marcia Freyman, LouAnn Hardy, Anna Marie Johnson, Kevin Jones, Mike Knecht, Debbie Sharp, Enid Wohlstein

Enid handout out a copy of the group members who belonged to Info Lit & Outreach.  She also handed out a sheet with the charge, projects, and future plans for each of the two groups.  [See as attachment to minutes.]

The groups spent about 20 minutes finalizing the KYVL Instructor’s Survey that will attempt gain information from KYVL Instructors’ use of the KYVL How to Do Research Tutorial.  Enid will ask for feedback from the Info Lit group by Friday March 25, 2005 and the survey should go out to the instructors next week.  They will be given two weeks to respond.

There was a question about the public library website survey which was listed on the projects for the Outreach Group.  That survey looked at the presence (or lack thereof) of KYVL on public library webpages and was written up by Debbie Sharp and Allen Ashman in KY Libraries.  LouAnn reminded the groups that the absence of a mention of KYVL, does not mean that it is not being used.  She cited the example of her library where they have webpage constraints and have difficulty altering their webpage, but she promotes the use of the databases to many of her patrons and find the databases invaluable resources for her library.

The group also discussed at length, the idea of promoting use of KYVL or the KYVL databases.  The project is one on the Information Literacy team’s agenda and taps into “real life” information literacy needs and answers found in the databases such as…a teacher using the Ebsco Primary Source database for articles for his students’ Open Response Questions or a parent looking for the best car seat for her infant using Consumer Reports in Ebsco.  Other ideas were…

Drugs taken off the market/consumer health questions you didn’t want to ask your doctor

Travel books in Masterfile

Car purchases in Consumer Reports

Legitimate movie reviews

Other Ideas to promote the databases included…

10 Ways to Use KYVL databases

tabletents in select public libraries

Grolier has lesson plans, will have new interface, could be promoted to teachers

The question of the audience for these efforts was raised.  Some possibilities…

Legislators

Public libraries (now only consistitute 8% of total database use)

Public who are not using libraries or databases

High schools—(K-12 is only 20% of database use)

As far as evidence for legislators, Enid has numbers for what it would cost everyone to get databases if we didn’t go in it together (cost savings for state).

Other venues for promoting the use of KYVL and KYVL databases are....

Small Business Centers

City government

Nursing Home activities

Neighborhood associations

Librarians in their communities talking about KYVL—we could do outlines or short descriptions of ideas when talking to groups

Scouts

Senior Citizen centers

TOC current awareness

This led into a discussion of funding structure of KYVL

Overall increase across the board every year, or some kind of funding structure based on type of library, etc.  Enid is working with the Virtual Library Advisory Committee to resolve this.  KYVL cannot lobby the legislature itself.  Its funding comes from the CPE.
