2. VLAC Members’ Update (All)
Chela Kaplan reported to the group that she will be creating a KyEducators electronic newsletter.
Bill Hansen, Chair of the Virtual Library Users’ Group, announced that VLUG welcomes any new members. The VLUG listserv provides a forum for an exchange of ideas. If interested in becoming a member, a link to KYVL Users’ Group is on the KYVL website.
Charlene Davis reported that KDLA might possibly be shifted to the Education Cabinet. They will know for sure at a later date.
Lee Van Orsdel reported on the implementation of SFX linking product from Ex Libris at EKU and the installation of a coffee shop by early March.
Cherry Berges from Maysville said they are developing a unified job description for staff members. She also mentioned the Loman C. Trover Reading Series. Nikky Finney, poet and teacher, was the featured writer in October. Her reading drew over 160 people.
3. QuestionPoint Demonstration (Hansen)
Bill Hansen gave a presentation on the Defense Digital Library Research Service. He also gave a demonstration of QuestionPoint for collaborative digital reference. Bill reviewed the features and capabilities of the product, discussed workflow and reporting. He also discussed the membership and partners.
4. Work Group Reports (Wohlstein)
ADA: We will be revamping KYVL.org for ADA compliance. The group is working on an accessibility statement. We expect to conduct usability studies when a beta site has been created.
InfoLit: Will meet in late January. The group has been reviewing the “How To Do Research” tutorial and discussing assessment tools. The group is also discussing a survey of KYVU faculty and instructors to gain insight into the perspective on information literacy.
Outreach: The group has been discussing how to better reach our libraries and users. The group is looking at national efforts in library awareness and advocacy.
The KYVL Create a PSA Video Contest has been announced to the public K-12 STLP (student technology leadership program) advisors and students. We have received 11 commitment letters from instructors indicating an intent to submit an entry. Entries are due in February.
Portal: The group has been investigating the replacement of our SiteSearch software. We have been looking at products for federated searching and linking as well. We need a product to search across our databases, library catalogs and other proprietary databases. We would like to acquire a product via a statewide contract.
An RFI (request for information) is in progress. The group expects to finalize the RFI in January and post the RFI in February. The RFI responses will be used in creating the RFP.
5. KYVL Update
Training: Tanzi reported that we had 80 librarians training in the six Fall Training sessions conducted. Work will begin on the Spring schedule in early 2004.
Password Change (Wohlstein):
The December password change has been postponed to 1 July. We are adding new
user communities as well as working on singe sign-on to KYVL databases from
within Angel, the KYVU course management system. We had to delay because of
the intricacies of the OCLC groups and subgroups. We need to restructure the
groups and that entails contacting all member libraries to gather IP addresses.
We will coordinate with our member libraries to make a smooth transition to
the new groups.
