Teachers and Kids Minutes

Teachers and Kids Work Group
Jan 30, 2002

Present - Paula Whitmer, Jane Smith, Barby Hardy, Diane Culbertson, Joy Bozorgzad, Tanzi Merritt, Susan Brown

Update on RFPs
We currently have 2 RFP responses and at least one more is expected. As determined at the last meeting, the small group (Barby Hardy, Diane Culbertson, Becky Stevens, and Susan Brown) will be reading and evaluating them next Friday Feb. 8 at 10am.

ID for ProQuest
The group decided that the proquest id would be kykidsrule. There is a possibility that we might change all the ids to match this next fall. KYVL is also discussing the possibility that we might put the K12 pages inside the WebZ authentication. The group did not want any changes until the summer. This issue will be revisited at a later meeting. We also discussed the dates for chaning the passwords. The native interfaces demand hard cut over dates. It would be okay for the Spring Semester one to end June 15. We discussed the Fall Semester one starting August 1. Barby suggested it would really be better to start it July 1. Could K12 have only two id/passwords in a year? Probably not because of contractual agreements.

Training
Diane reported on the training she is doing in the state for TRTs. She is spending 90 minutes out of three hour session on KYVL. She is also creating an online course for KDE employees in the KVHS courseware. The course costs $300 for 1/2 credit. She is planning a second one for KVHS students. She will also be training the folks in the content groups at KDE.

This lead to discussion of the new training workgroup that Tanzi Merritt is getting together and the online courses that she is developing for librarians and end users on how to use the VL. Barby reiterated the idea she brought up at the last meeting to be sure when developing training, not just show how to use the VL but also how to incorporate it into the classroom.

We also discussed the ephemeral plans for a trainers toolbox where materials would be housed on the web. There might be a form for people to submit ideas and lessons for what they did for their training sessions. Also, the training group might create a form for anyone who is doing training to report that they have done it.

Library Speak
Miko and Daniel Rabuzzi had a good conversation with David Couch. One of the things that David mentioned was complaints about library speak. The group looked at the K12 pages and did think that the word "primary" in the description of Kentuckiana might be confusing in a K12 setting. Tanzi will rewrite the description. Any instances of confusion should be reported to VL so we can make changes.

KBE
Miko will be speaking to the Kentucky Board of Education for 15 minutes on Saturday.

Membership
We discussed the group membership. Barby reported that Alice Nelson cannot come to the meetings but would like to continue to be on the listserv. She is talking with other parents to see if there is interest. We also discussed having teachers on the work group. Paula reminded us that she is a teacher, not a librarian (thanks for keeping the librarians honest, Paula :-) ). Joy said that she knew of a teacher that might be interested.

Next Meeting
The date of the next meeting has not been determined.
