INTRODUCTIONS
Daniel Rabuzzi, CEO of the Kentucky Virtual University, was introduced by Miko
Pattie.
Tom Breslin, Vice President for EISI Customer Services, was introduced by Linda
Voyles.
Midway College and Campbellsville were welcomed to the Consortium
INCIDENT REPORTS
Linda Voyles gave a presentation on processes and procedures used at EISI for
Incident Reports. The Powerpoint maybe found on line at http://support.endinfosys.com.
Elsie Pritchard asked if we could contact people by phone at EISI when following up on an incident. Linda indicated that we could contact the owner of the incident. If the owner can't be reached then contact Shelby, or leave a time when you can be reached and someone will call you back
TRAINING
Tari Keller reported on the Allen Manifold workshops scheduled for 11/14/01
through 11/16/01. There will be a 2 day Voyager/Access workshop which currently
has 20 people signed up. The cost will be around $150 or less if the class is
filled. And there will be a 1 day workshop on the BLOB -- currently 16 people
are registered for the BLOB class and the cost will be around $75 or less if
the class is filled. Tari will send out a list of registered individuals to
the KYVL listserv. Videotapes from the previous Allen Manifold sessions are
still available from the University of Kentucky. If we get Allen's permission
we will attempt to post his PowerPoint of the session on the web.
Ann Doyle from UK is preparing a workshop on subscription patterns, and a discussion ensued. It was proposed that the Kentucky Voyagers Users Group sponsor it. Perry Bratcher agreed to investagating it.
Miko asked that all members review the "KYVL Endeavor Training Account Procedures". The only training remaining from last year is as follows: 1 day for Murray State, 2 days for KCTCS, and 3 days for UK. People may contact Marjorie Vloss at EISI to schedule these 6 training days, and please follow the procedures as outlined in the "KYVL Endeavor Training Account Procedures". Miko indicated that there will be approximately $50,000 in the KYVL budget this year for additional training days.
Training for the two system administrators (eastlib and westlib) is paid for by the members of the consortium as determined by a formula and included in member's maintenance fees. Because Midway and Campbellsville are joining us we will all pay a little bit less.
SECURITY
Discussion on the use of Secure Shell in the test server: Telnet has been turned
off and many people are using either PuTTY or SSH. Some where unhappy about
losing Telnet. PuTTY is free to all and SSH is free to educational institutions.
Keith Stevenson felt that the Help menus on SSH were much more helpful than
instructions for PuTTY. Keith reminded us that no matter which secure shell
client we want to use it MUST be for version 2.0 or higher.
The group then discussed switching Eastlib and Westlib over to secure shell and TURNING OFF telnet and ftp. Secure shell ftp clients are hard to come by, but Todd King has found "CuteFTP Pro" for $60 per licensed copy, to be a very useful secure shell ftp client. It can be found at http://www.globalscape.com/products/cuteftppro. No one has been able to find a free SSHftp version 2.
The consortium unanimously voted to turn off telnet and ftp by 1/1/2002. We ALL need to find and use a secure shell telnet and ftp client by then.
Keith is pursuing with EISI and, especially, Oracle an update on the Oracle security breach through the Oracle listner. No word yet on when a patch will be available, but when it is it will be applied.
MISCELLANEOUS
Ilona asked if one library could purchase individual EISI products and have
them installed. From Endeavors view point this can be done, but both Dave Block
and Kieth felt that a smooth implementation of such situations has many drawbacks.
When purchasing products we always have to be aware of possible hardware limitations
and factor in any increases needed for hardware.
We are looking for someone to host a training day so EISI can demonstrate some new products near the time of our next meeting
Next meeting will be 12/6/01.
