Endeavor Update

Linda Voyles reviewed the progress on the release upgrades. 2001.2. AIX is in beta testing and should be available by the end of June. The Unicode release is being tested by LC; it begins functional beta testing next week. There is a lot of information on SupportWeb about the conversion process for Unicode. It should be available by the end of September. The upgrade of EnCompass and LinkFinder Plus will be in beta by the Summer. Coding for 5.0--the new naming convention for the next release after Unicode--will begin in August. It should be in beta by December/January.

There have been lots of EISI staff changes, a lot of recruiting to fill positions, and they are moving to a new HQ the weekend of July 19th. There will be a new phone system--with background music, but NO ADS.

Finally, there will be a new online method for querying incidents due out this Summer. There will be more information available at ALA and on SupportWeb.

A question was posed about the AIX 5, Oracle 9i upgrade compatibility. Linda noted that Oracle 9i will be synchronized with the Unicode release. Also, there will be a techie conference call between EISI upgrade staff and the hubsite staff before the KYVL upgrade.

Upgrade Planning

After some discussion, Keith agreed to try the AIX release upgrade on the test server when it is available the end of June, and if all goes well, he and Dave will then do the hubsite upgrades during the first two weekends in August. If not, then EISI will do them. Linda wants to book some weeks for our upgrade now--just in case--so the consensus was to schedule Westlib for July 21-24 and Eastlib for July 28-31. The early August slots are taken. After further discussion, a compromise was offered--in case the test server upgrade is problematic--is to have EISI do Westlib in July 21-24 and the hubsite staff do Eastlib on August 1-3 (over the weekend.) Keith will let us know when the 2001.2 release is available on the preview server.

As far as upgrade preparation, Tari pointed out that there is a lot of upgrade documentation on SupportWeb. The only problematic issue know at present is the emailing of notices changes that needs some pre-upgrade decision. There are no serious issues about space with MyOpac according to Dave.

Security Issues

We need to change passwords on both our SSH and MS Access log-ins on a regular basis. Dave will institute a system that will force changes every 90 days, and will also send out an email of instructions. Note that the minimum length is 8 characters, alpha/numeric. And phone--do not email--EISI with the new passwords. The MS Access password change will go into affect after the upgrade and needs to be noted when doing the table relinking of the ODBC drivers.

Training Issues

KDLA is installing and implementing Media Scheduling. Tari asked if we could give them two of the KYVL training days to do that. It was agreed that they could do this, and in turn they will serve as the resource in the Consortium for Media Scheduling issues.

The next meeting is September 4, 1:00, at CPE.
