Endeavor Update

Linda Voyles and Michael Reid reported to the consortium group by telephone call from Chicago.  Highlights of their report include as follows:

·         Endeavor will soon release a patch for Voyager 5; the patch should resolve the sorting issue that is a problem at some sites.

·         Voyager 6 will go into early release testing in February 2006.  The release notes should be posted in early December on SupportWeb.  Voyager 6 should address the ISBN-13 issue, self-check, some media scheduling fixes, and the default “and” in keyword searching.  General release of Voyager 6 is scheduled for May or June.

·         Endeavor reporting module.  Release is now scheduled for summer 2006.  The software is based on Cognos, and has already been incorporated into Meridian software.  There is an add-on fee for the reporting module.

·         The new version of WebVoyage will be ready for release towards the end of 2006.

·         Encompass 4.0 will be released this summer; the next version of Link Finder will be released in the spring.

·         The next release of Meridian (version 1.5) is scheduled to come out in early spring.

·         Endeavor has hired three new staff in sales.

·         Training webcasts have been popular – an expanded number of courses have now been posted.  Some courses have sold out.

·         EndUser is scheduled for April 18-22.  The keynote speaker is from Google.

·         Endeavor will be releasing a new quarterly electronic newsletter to customers.

The New WebVoyage Design

Mike Reid of Endeavor described the new OPAC design in detail, and showed us the Iteration ZR Prototype.  Elsevier sought input from their User-center Design Group to study user behavior as part of the development of this prototype.  Different levels of expertise were studied – freshmen, seniors, and so forth.  Images (such as book covers) can be added to the OPAC display.  There will be even more ability to customize the web display. Changes will carry forward from release to release.  The new design will be ADA-compliant.  Endeavor will support both versions of WebVoyage, but will eventually migrate over completely to the new WebVoyage, rendering the current WebVoyage obsolete.  The new prototype will be placed on a preview server next fall.  The new WebVoyage will be released separately from Voyager 6.  We do not know if we need to have migrated to Voyager 6 prior to the release or not; Linda Voyles will check to see if WebVoyage is compatible with pre-Voyager 6 releases.

Patchwork

Tari has had two conference calls with Endeavor concerning the Voyager 5 patch.   The patch should resolve problems with the default sorting on searches, a media scheduling problem, a self check problem, and a fix for automated retrieval.  Titus is working on getting AIX5 and Oracle on a test server.  EastLib is taping off all databases.  Endeavor will then run the patch on the test server and see if the software problems are resolved.  A Solaris site has already received the patch, where it ran successfully.  If all goes well, Endeavor will upgrade the test server next Thursday and Friday (December 8/9).  Patch installation by Endeavor is tentatively scheduled to take place Friday, December 16 or Monday, December 19.  The hub will have to be down for at least two hours during installation.

The Group discussed the post-sort problem – the problem seems to have affected EastLib but not WestLib.

The topic of Holdings keyword was raised.  A holdings regen will need to be run for holdings keyword to work successfully.  It was suggested that the patch be scheduled first and then, after patch installation, a holdings regen be run.

KYVL

Enid reported that CPE has created a mission statement of “Five Questions – One Mission:  Better Lives for Kentucky’s People.”  The mission statement ties in with the public agenda.   For more information, check the following website: www.cpe.ky.gov/planning/strategic

She then reviewed the agenda budget as of November 7, 2005 for the 2006-2008 capital budget plan.  Of interest to the workgroup is the recommendation that the legislature appropriate $4,000,000 to purchase KYVL an integrated library system.  This recommendation will be submitted to the legislature when they meet this coming January.  We will need assistance from our deans to push the recommendation through the legislature, and KYVL is preparing an advocacy piece for our deans.  Will we totally replace the integrated library system?  Or will we expand the capabilities of the system we already have?  A comment was made that the current hardware is getting older.

Training

Enid is reviewing the funding for Endeavor training.  Accounting problems continue, and still need to be cleaned up before we can consider training sessions.  Elsie mentioned that we should try to bring back Alan Manifold for access training; it was suggested he could present two sessions on Access basics plus a training session on the blob.

Next Year’s Schedule

The Workgroup has scheduled its 2006 quarterly meetings for March 3, June 1,   September 8, and December 1.
