I. What is KYVL's vision for this group?
KYVL sees this group acting as an advisory committee on training programs, training materials, and the possible development of a "Train the Trainer" program. The group will provide feedback to KYVL on training materials that are posted online, and will aid in the development of training materials and programs geared toward specific user groups.
II. Personal Introductions
III. Discussion of the proposed mission of the group.
Proposed mission statement: To advise the Kentucky Virtual Library on the development of training programs, materials, and trainers.
The group discussed this mission statement and recommended that it be amended to include evaluation and provision in addition to development. The revised and accepted mission reads:
To advise the Kentucky Virtual Library on the development, evaluation, and provision of training programs, materials, and trainers.
The question of how this work group differs from the Information Literacy Work Group was raised. One difference in the groups is that the Training Work Group's mission is focused on the services and databases that are provided by KYVL, which is a narrower focus than that of the Information Literacy Work Group, which deals with the issue of information literacy in general. It was suggested that the Training Work Group and Information Literacy Work Group could merge into one group. This possibility will be explored further.
Proposed goals for the group are:
1. To provide support in the way of outlines and materials to librarians who
are training others on the features and services of KYVL.
2. To provide online tutorials, training materials, and documentation geared
toward end users.
3. To develop a statewide network of KYVL trainers.
The proposed action plan is:
1. To develop a "How to Use KYVL" tutorial.
2. To develop an online "Trainer's Toolbox."
3. To provide access to training materials created by Kentucky librarians who
provide training on KYVL features and services.
4. To develop a statewide network of KYVL trainers.
The "How to use KYVL" tutorial is nearing completion and will hopefully be available for review by the work group within 2-3 weeks.
It was determined that there needs to be a plan for the development of the Trainer's Toolbox, as the amount of material available, without a good organizational structure, could easily become unwieldy and hard to navigate. However, it is important to provide a wide variety of materials that address the training needs of various user communities and designed to fit into a variety of time frames (i.e. 20 minute training sessions, 1 hour sessions, all day sessions, etc.) The group decided that the best method of organization of the toolbox is to provide materials by user community, and that the toolbox might be made up of several pages in order to provide all information that might be useful without creating a site that is too difficult to navigate.
Does the Trainer's Toolbox need to provide links to information (primarily articles) on training strategies such as how to train adults, how to train teachers, etc., and other information useful for trainers? The group felt that this was unnecessary at this time, but we might want to create an additional page in the future that provides links to this type of information. It is highly possible that there might already be pages on the Internet that do just this, and we should locate and create links to materials that have already been developed in this area.
The question was raised as to how to target groups that would benefit from KYVL training. KYVL is looking into being approved for professional development training for the K-12 schools, but this is an area that needs to be explored further.
It was determined that a preliminary Trainer's Toolbox will be designed by Tanzi Merritt within the next 2-3 weeks that will include the materials that we already have available. This will be the foundation from which we expand on materials geared toward specific user communities. The group will be notified when the preliminary toolbox is available for review.
The group also was shown the preliminary storyboards for the new research tutorial being created for children, as well as the new Information Literacy tutorial.
IV. Preview of the new "How to Use KYVL" tutorial
The group will be notified when the tutorial is ready for review.
V. Discussion of a KYVL Trainer Certification program
Because KYVL cannot offer honorarium to individuals who train others to use KYVL, so the idea of certifying KYVL trainers was considered. It was determined that at this time we do not have the resources for maintaining an actual certification process, as we would want to make certain that the certified trainers were knowledgeable about KYVL and that they were kept up to date on all changes. A structured training program would be necessary, and the group felt that it was very important that trainers demonstrate their training ability prior to receiving certification. The issue of refresher training was also discussed. The group determined that the best course of action for now would be to create a network of librarians who are willing to provide KYVL training throughout the state, and to solicit recommendations for those trainers, but not to take on the large task of creating our own certification process.
Group members will be notified when the tutorial and toolbox are ready for review, and links to these items will be located in the group's workspace. The group members agreed to forward any training materials that they have or any information that would be useful in the Trainer's Toolbox to Tanzi. The group will also forward the names of any individuals that they know of who do KYVL training to Tanzi. A date for the next meeting will be set up after the group has had an opportunity to review the tutorial and the toolbox.
