KYVL has contracted with companies (vendors) to provide access to 40+ databases. These databases provide access to bibliographic information (author, title, etc.), abstracts (a short description), and often the full text of articles. More information on each vendor is located below. Find descriptions of all the databases here.

The KYVL databases are for Kentuckians and Kentucky institutions' students/faculty. The databases can be freely accessed in a Kentucky library that is participating in KYVL. These include public libraries, publicly funded academic libraries, many privately funded academic libraries, K-12 libraries, and many special libraries. Access from home is available to officially registered patrons of Kentucky libraries.

The committee which makes recommendations on which databases to choose is the Collections Work Group.

Interfaces

An interface is how the information you use and the requests you make are formatted. If you have ever used Netscape and Internet Explorer to access the Web, you know that you get the same information using either one but the buttons you use and the look of the information is slightly different. The same thing is true of databases. The same data can be searched and formatted in many different ways depending on which interface you use.

• Proprietary Interface - the interface provided by the vendor. Sometimes referred to as the native interface. (*Note: The KYVL ID and password will not allow access to the databases directly through the native interfaces.)

  • EBSCO and FirstSearch will allow you to customize their interfaces for your library.

• WebZ Interface - the interface provided by KYVL. It provides one common interface for catalogs and databases. You use this interface when you click on the "Catalogs and Databases" button from the KYVL main page.
  • There are now links into the native interfaces from the WebZ interface. This allows you to access all the proprietary interfaces using one id and password. Simply click on "Catalogs and Databases" to see all your options.

Passwords

When you are at most institutions, you will not need to worry about an ID and password to access the databases because where ever possible we have used IP addresses for authentication.

For those that are dialing for access (the few institutions that do not have a static IP range and for those who are getting in from home), we have designed IDs and passwords. These work only with the WebZ interface.

Password changes occur twice a year, 15 December and 1 July. After a password change, the previous password will continue to work for 45 days.

IP Problems

Check IP number on your machine. - This is what the world sees as your IP address. If you are going through a proxy to access the Internet, the world will see the IP number for the last proxy you went through.

Proxies and Firewalls

The Kentucky Virtual Library uses IP authentication for some Internet based databases. If your organization/library/school uses a proxy server or some form of internet caching system (such as Cacheflow) to increase Internet performance, these databases will not authenticate properly. It is important that you allow these sites to bypass the proxy or caching system thus allowing the end user to achieve direct communication with these databases and not a cached version of the site. Generally this means adding these sites to a "pass-through" list or filter. Consult the documentation of your proxy/caching device for the specific instructions.

It is important to add these to your list or filter. Because of their dynamic nature, the sites become very difficult to use if they are not passed through and can return wrong and irrelevant results to your users, or impede access completely.
