KYVL Membership
Anyone may have access to the free resources of http://www.kyvl.org. To use the licensed databases, a person must be affiliated with a member library in Kentucky.
Member Libraries:
- Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives
- Kentucky Department of Education (the K-12 public schools)
- Public Academic Institutions (Eastern Kentucky University, Kentucky State University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University, University of Kentucky with Lexington Community College, University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University)
- Independent Academic Institutions (Alice Lloyd College, Asbury College, Bellarmine College, Berea College, Brescia University, Campbellsville University, Centre College, Cumberland College, Georgetown College, Kentucky Christian College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Lindsey Wilson, Midway College, Pikeville College, Spalding University, St. Catharine College, Thomas More College, Transylvania University, and Union College)
- Kentucky Community and Technical College System
- Kentucky Adult Education
- Kentucky's Public Libraries
- Some special libraries, special academic institutions and independent schools/systems
Access for Private K-12 Schools and Postsecondary Institutions - Private or independent elementary, secondary and postsecondary schools and institutions may gain access to the licensed databases for a fee. The General Counsel of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education has provided an explanation. A private K-12 school must be certified by the Kentucky Department of Education. A private postsecondary institution must be licensed by the Kentucky State Board for Proprietary Education or the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.
The member fee, as determined by criteria established by the Virtual Library Advisory Committee, is actually a contribution towards the costs of the KYVL database contracts. KYVL's fiscal year runs July 1 through June of the following year, same as the state of Kentucky. Typically, KYVL invoices members in May or early June for the upcoming fiscal year.
Membership to KYVL gives a library access to the licensed databases in two ways:
- Via IP authentication which means onsite access via any computer on the network served by the IP's provided to KYVL; and,
- An id/password that the member library may distribute to registered patrons or affiliated users of that library to access the KYVL databases remotely.
Please contact the KYVL Director, Enid Wohlstein, for further information.
