ProQuest Newsstand: National Newspapers is the single source for coverage of the nation’s leading newspapers. National Newspapers provides comprehensive, quality controlled indexing to articles from leading national newspapers. In addition to complete bibliographic information, every record includes either an abstract or annotated headline, to make it easier for researchers to identify relevant records. National Newspapers 27 includes theChristian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, USA TODAY, San Francisco Chronicle, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Houston Chronicle, and Times-Picayune from New Orleans.


The ProQuest Historical Newspapers Black Newspapers Collection provides a cultural perspective and insight to the events that shaped the United States in the twentieth century, including the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Covering everything from major events to everyday life, the Collection invaluable research tools for studying American history and African-American culture, history, politics, and art.

The Collection includes four of the most historically important U.S. African-American newspapers.

  • New York Amsterdam News (1922-1993). This leading 20th century African-American newspaper reached its peak in the 1940s. The Amsterdam News was a strong advocate for the desegregation of the U.S. military during World War II, and also covered the historically important Harlem Renaissance.
  • Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002). One of the most nationally circulated African-American newspapers, the Courier reached its peak in the 1930s. A conservative voice in the African-American community, the Courier challenged the misrepresentation of African-Americans in the national media and advocated social reforms to advance the cause of civil rights.
  • Los Angeles Sentinel (1946-1991). The oldest and largest African-American newspaper in the western U.S., and one of the largest African-American owned newspapers in the U.S.
  • Atlanta Daily World (1931-1995). The Daily World had the first African-American White House correspondent, and was the first 20th century U.S. African-American daily.

These titles are fully cross-searchable with all other ProQuest Historical Newspapers, including the New York Times and Chicago Tribune—allowing researchers to evaluate what were viewed as “mainstream” and “minority” perspectives on the news. These titles can be also be made available within Black Studies Center, allowing cross-searching with other content sets focused on the African-American experience.

Each title features powerful and easy-to-use tools, including full page and article level image content, backfiles, multiple search options, detailed citations and abstracts, and easy printing and PDF downloading. The titles are available individually, or with special pricing in combination. 


ProQuest Latin American Newsstand provides full text news in Spanish and Portuguese from over 40 titles from Puerto Rico and eleven Latin American countries (including Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil). The database provides the best match for the needs of the Latin American Studies researcher, general researcher or serious researcher looking for a resource focused on Latin American news. The ProQuest interface makes it very easy to isolate, or to cross-search, relevant newspaper content. Each issue of every newspaper is indexed thoroughly, offering researchers access to both top news stories and all aspects of Latin opinion and culture.

Ethnic NewsWatch Complete provides interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish), and comprehensive full text from the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. Providing information and opinions on topics rarely covered in mainstream publications, it also mirrors articles from the majority press from different and unique viewpoints. With an unequaled collection of articles, editorials and reviews from a broad spectrum of perspectives, the database provides a valuable interdisciplinary resource. GenderWatch is a full text database of over 220 unique and diverse publications that focus on how gender impacts a broad spectrum of subject areas. With its archival material dating back to 1970 in some cases, GenderWatch is a repository of an important historical perspective on the evolution of the women's movement and the changes in gender roles and understandings over the last twenty to thirty years. The database supports programs in business, education, literature, the arts, health sciences, history, political science, public policy, sociology and contemporary culture, gender and women's studies and more. Publications include scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, and NGO, government and special reports.


The original Chadwyck-Healey Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps collection on microfilm has long been one of the few comprehensive sets of maps of the entire United States, and are the most frequently consulted maps in both public and academic libraries. The maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists, and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Sanborn Maps are large-scale plans containing information such as building outlines, detailed structural information (size, shape, construction materials, heights, and function), and locations of windows and doors. The maps also provide street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Some areas are represented by as many as eight different editions.

We've enhanced and digitized the same maps to create Digital Sanborn Maps 1867-1970 , which  provides academic and public libraries online access to more than 660,000 large-scale maps of more than 12,000 American towns and cities. ProQuest Psychology Journals includes nearly 600 psychology and psychosomatic publications, with nearly 500 available in full text. All of its titles are of high academic quality; many are heavily cited, and have strong ISI impact factors. With coverage dating from 1992 forward, ProQuest Psychology Journals covers clinical and social psychology as well as related disciplines like genetics, psychology of business and economics, addiction, linguistics, neurology, criminology, social welfare and more.


The Philosopher's Index is a bibliographic database with informative, author-written abstracts covering scholarly research in all areas of philosophy. The literature covered goes back to 1940 and includes journal articles, books, book chapters such as contributions to an anthology, and book reviews.

The Philosopher's Index monitors over 550 journals from more than 40 countries and is updated quarterly. Extensive indexing includes personal and proper names along with subject terms; there is also the capability to search for the authors of book reviews.


Literature Online (LION) is the world's leading academic full text and criticism online resource for literature written in English. With the third edition, the unique contents of this resource are even more readily available, and are provided with unique 21st century functionality. Literature Online provides both scholars and students with texts, criticism, and search tools that open up new possibilities for academic research, teaching and undergraduate learning. ProQuest Learning: Literature delivers more than 180,000 full text works of poetry, prose, and drama from medieval times to the present. Students can also find secondary sources such as author biographies, literary criticisms, essays, reviews, study pages, multimedia, and interviews that place the original works in context. ProQuest Learning: Literature also features over 130 searchable full text literary journals and magazines for the latest in literary criticism. Titles include the New York Times Book Review, Black Issues Book Review, The Explicator, Hispanic Review, World Literature Today, and The Writer.

Quick Search allows students to search the entire collection at once; and Search Criticism enables students to search the literary magazines and journals for the latest critical works. International Index to the Performing Arts (IIPA) is the only online index covering the performing arts. It enables you to search and browse citations and abstracts in a comprehensive range of journals concentrating on a variety of subjects, including dance, film, drama, television, the arts and entertainment industry, stagecraft, magic, musical theatre and performance art. Abstracts are provided for every citation from 1998 forward to give further detail and offer additional access points to information. The coverage in IIPA is wide, ranging from as early as 1864 right up to the present.

To the indexing and abstract coverage of 242 performing arts journals, IIPA Full Text adds 84 full text titles. There is also full text for complete runs of important performing arts titles, such as Theatre Journal (1949-), Cinema Journal (1962-), Journal of Popular Film and Television (1972), and Film History (1987-), as well as current full text coverage for key titles.

IIPAFT is the only database that provides specialty indexing, abstracts and full text for performing arts journals only, offering targeted searching and results. SIRS Government Reporter combines a wide range of information published by and about the U.S. federal government. Documents date from 1990 to the present, and are 100% full text; many include graphics. The database provides information about federal agencies, elected leaders, and more.

Of special interest is U.S. Supreme Court coverage, which provides case documents dating back to the inception of the Court up through current decisions. Users can search cases by keyword (across full text, case name, or subject), and browse cases alphabetically, by Constitutional article and amendment, and by topic.
