International Harvester in Benham

The town of Benham was one of two "model" coal towns built in the 1910s in

Harlan County (Lynch is the other). Benham was built, owned, and operated by

the International Harvester Company.  The Archive has a broad and

miscellaneous holding of

Company files dating from the years 1911 to 1971.

 

There are 40 large banker's boxes and 25 very

large ledgers in the collection.

The Archive's Caudill holdings include a small

collection of historical photographs of the development of Letcher County;

Caudill's clippings on a wide range of topics including Kentucky history,

genetics and intelligence, the development of the Appalachian Regional

Commission, and coal mining regulation; and a collection of articles written

by Caudill for various publications.

The collection consists of three file
