It's a company whose research project is the INTERNET also called The World Wide Web.
A Search Engine is like a giant INDEX just like the ones in the back of books.
When you type in your key word or phrase, it's like asking the Search Engine, "What do you know about this subject?"
Search Engines have little programs called SPIDERS or BOTS that gather information from millions of websites!
A SPECIFIC word or phrase will give you the best results.
If your query is too GENERAL, (such as "dog" or "space"), you might get millions of matches.
But if you type "first dog in space" you'll probably get exactly the information you want.
If there are many words you don't understand on a website, it might not be the best resource for you. See the Five-Finger Test.
If you get a page that says "Error 404" or "File not Found", the page is no longer on the Web. Just use the BACK button if this happens.
