KYVL Budget and Databases Summer 2008

Thank you for taking time to visit our page about the KYVL databases budget cuts and our pledge drive.

Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL), as part of the Council Postsecondary Education (CPE), has been severely impacted by budget reductions applied to agencies due to decreased state revenues. Since January 2008, CPE, and therefore KYVL, have taken cuts totaling 19.5%. The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, due to the overall budget reductions, had to reduce its contribution by more than half. Due to cuts directly to the KYVL budget, and the reduce contribution from KDLA, KYVL has a significant shortfall in funds for the research database subscriptions and brought the KYVL Collections Workgroup into service for the deselection of current core collection databases in order to reduce the current database budget.

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and the Kentucky Department of Education have been significant contributors to the overall database subscription costs since the KYVL launch in 1999. All KYVL members contribute a fee which is applied to the database subscriptions. The public universities, community and technical colleges, public libraries, and all other members contribute directly to the resources KYVL subscribes to for access by all participants. Non-public members achieve considerable savings via the statewide acquisition and funding of these subscriptions. Historically, through this collaborative effort, the public participants realize a cost avoidance of more than $10 million a year.

29 August, 4pm.  After much work by KYVL and SOLINET these last few weeks, we are almost at the end of the journey.

Thank you for your pledges, support and all around encouragement!  All in all, despite not raising the amounts needed, we did have an outpouring of support from our membership.  We thank you, sincerely, for your participation on the pledge drive and survey.

Good News!! Alt-Press Watch and Career & Technical from ProQuest will continue to be offered in the KYVL core collection.  These were the first and second priority products to retain, as recommended by the KYVL Collections Workgroup and approved by the Virtual Library Advisory Committee.

It’s been a frantic couple of months but we’ve rallied and saved two databases slated for cancellation.  We are so grateful to everyone who pledged, no matter what the amount.  Your support is sincerely appreciated!

More information will be forthcoming next week as we learn more from the vendors.  And thanks is due to the vendors as well for working with SOLINET and KYVL during these last two months as we sought to negotiate reduced fees, group acquisitions and extend access while purchases were made.

Questions, please let email us or contact your SOLINET representative.

Many thanks for your kind words, patience and commitment to Kentucky Virtual Library

If you are interested in making a pledge to save any one of these databases, please download our commitment form.
