Glossary of Resource Sharing Terms

  • access services:  Library functions that enable adequate and timely access to a library’s collections, including circulation, document delivery, interlibrary loan, reserves, stacks management, and so on. For more information, see the page on Access Services at the ALA wiki.
  • Ariel: A document delivery/interlibrary loan software system enabling libraries to scan and transmit document images to other system workstations using e-mail or fax.
  • document delivery: A set of library workflows and/or systems allowing a user of one library to borrow materials (physically or electronically) which are owned by another library. Sometimes used synonymously with interlibrary loan or document supply.
  • fill rate: In general, the ability of a library to meet patron demand for requested materials. A basic calculation for is Fill Rate = Number of Requests Shipped / Total Number of Requests.
  • ILLiad:  An resource sharing automation system from OCLC that manages inter-library borrowing, lending and document delivery of library materials through a single interface. For more information, see OCLC’s product page.
  • interlibrary loan: A service in which a user of one library system can borrow books or other materials from another library system. Often abbreviated as ILL, and also called interloan, document delivery, or document supply.
  • intralibrary loan: The loan of an item between two locations or departments of the same library system.
  • OCLC: The Online Computer Library Center is a nonprofit organization based in Dublin, Ohio that provides a number of bibliographic, indexing, abstracting, and other services to libraries. For more information, see the official OCLC website.
  • reciprocal agreement: A formal agreement between libraries guaranteeing the exchange of library services, in this case that lending and borrowing of library materials between patrons of each library. Examples of reciprocal resource sharing agreements in Kentucky include those managed by the Kentucky Virtual Library and SAALCK.
  • union catalog: A catalog containing the bibliographic records and holdings of more than one library catalog in sequential order.
  • WorldCat: An union catalog hosted by OCLC that contains the holdings of nearly 27,000 member libraries in more than 112 countries worldwide. See WorldCat.org.
